Warm Golden Pear & Cardamom Purée

This soothing purée is a traditional remedy often used to provide comfort during seasonal transitions. By gently poaching the fruit with aromatic spices, it becomes a warm, easily digestible meal that supports both the gut and the breath.

The Benefits

  • Digestive Ease: Pears are a natural source of pectin, a soluble fiber that adds gentle bulk to the stool and helps regulate the digestive tract without causing irritation. When cooked into a purée, the fibers are softened, making the nutrients more accessible to the body.
  • Respiratory Comfort: In many folk traditions, cooked pears are believed to help “moisten” the lungs. This can be particularly helpful for soothing a dry, scratchy throat or managing the discomfort associated with a dry cough.
  • Warmth and Circulation: Cardamom is a warming spice that aids in breaking down mucus and supporting healthy circulation. Its carminative properties also help reduce bloating and gas, ensuring the digestive process remains smooth and comfortable.

Golden Pear & Cardamom Purée

This dish is best served warm as a gentle breakfast or a calming evening snack. Its soft texture and mild sweetness make it suitable for all ages.

Ingredients

  • 3 ripe Bosc or Anjou pears, peeled, cored, and sliced
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cardamom (or 3 green cardamom pods, crushed)
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground turmeric (for the “golden” hue and added support)
  • 1/2 inch fresh ginger, peeled and grated
  • 1/2 cup filtered water
  • 1 teaspoon raw honey (optional, added after cooling slightly)
  • A squeeze of fresh lemon juice

Instructions

  1. Place the sliced pears, grated ginger, cardamom, and turmeric into a medium saucepan.
  2. Add the filtered water and a small squeeze of lemon juice to prevent browning and add a hint of brightness.
  3. Cover the pan and bring to a very low simmer over medium-low heat.
  4. Cook for 15 to 20 minutes, or until the pears are very soft and can be easily mashed with a fork.
  5. Remove from heat. If you used whole cardamom pods, remove them now.
  6. Use a fork or a potato masher to create a rustic purée. For a completely smooth consistency, you may use a handheld blender.
  7. Allow the purée to cool to a comfortable eating temperature before stirring in the raw honey, if desired.
  8. Serve warm in a small bowl.
