The practice of placing warm oil in the ears, known in traditional wellness as Karna Purana, is a deeply soothing ritual often used to calm an overactive nervous system. While it might seem “strange” to those accustomed to modern medicine, this ancient technique is highly regarded for its ability to ground the body and quiet the mind.
In traditional practices, the ears are considered a gateway to the “air” element of the body. When this element is out of balanceโoften manifesting as restlessness, dry skin, or a buzzing mindโwarm sesame oil is used to provide a sense of “heaviness” and lubrication.

Warm Sesame Ear Oil
Sesame oil is the preferred choice for this ritual because it is naturally warming and has a high density that helps “settle” the senses. It is often used to address minor ear dryness and to promote a profound sense of relaxation before sleep.
The Benefits:
- Calming the Senses: The warmth and weight of the oil can help reduce feelings of anxiety and “racing thoughts.”
- Supporting Jaw Tension: Many find that lubricating the ear canal helps relax the surrounding muscles of the jaw and neck.
- Lubrication: Just as we moisturize our skin, the ear canal can benefit from gentle lubrication to prevent itching and dryness.
- Improved Sleep: This ritual is a classic folk remedy for those who struggle with light sleeping or restlessness.
Warm Sesame Ear Oil
| Ingredient | Amount | Purpose |
| Organic Cold-Pressed Sesame Oil | 1 tablespoon | The warming, grounding base |
| Glass Dropper | 1 dropper | For precise, gentle application |
| Warm Water Bowl | 1 small bowl | To indirectly heat the oil |
Instructions:
- Warm: Place the sesame oil in a small glass bottle or container. Set this container inside a bowl of warm water for a few minutes.
- Temperature Check: Always test a drop on the inside of your wrist. It should feel pleasantly warm, like a lukewarm bathโnever hot.
- Position: Lie on your side with one ear facing the ceiling.
- Apply: Use the dropper to place 2โ3 drops of the warm oil into the ear canal.
- Massage: Gently massage the outer ear and the area just behind the earlobe for 1โ2 minutes to help the oil settle deep into the canal.
- Rest: Stay in this position for 5 minutes. You may notice your hearing becomes muffled; this is normal and part of the sensory withdrawal that aids relaxation.
- Drain: Turn over onto a towel to let the oil drain out naturally. Repeat the process on the other ear.
- Cleanse: Use a warm damp cloth to wipe the outer ear only. Never insert cotton swabs into the canal.
A Gentle Note: This practice should never be performed if you have a perforated eardrum, an active ear infection, fluid drainage, or if you have tubes in your ears. It is strictly for comfort and relaxation of the healthy ear.
