Clear-Vision Berry Infusion

This deep-purple, antioxidant-rich tea is a traditional tonic designed to be sipped while warm to support the blood flow to the head and eyes.

Ingredients

  • 1 tablespoon Dried Bilberries (or Dried Blueberries): Contain anthocyanidins that help the eyes adapt to changes in light and protect the retina from oxidative damage.
  • 1 teaspoon Dried Eyebright: An ancient herb used specifically to soothe “tired” eyes and support the mucous membranes around the ocular area.
  • 1/2 teaspoon Dried Calendula Petals: Provides lutein and zeaxanthin, the “internal sunglasses” that protect the eyes from blue light and UV damage.
  • 1 small slice of Fresh Ginger: To help the body deliver these nutrients to the small vessels of the eyes more efficiently.
  • 500ml Water (approximately 2 cups).

Instructions

  1. Simmer the Berries: Place the dried bilberries and ginger in a pot with the water.
  2. Decoct: Bring to a boil, then reduce the heat and simmer for 10 minutes. The water should turn a dark, rich purple as the pigments are released.
  3. Add the Herbs: Turn off the heat and add the dried eyebright and calendula petals.
  4. Steep: Cover tightly and let the mixture steep for 10 minutes.
  5. Strain and Mash: Strain the liquid into a mug. Use the back of a spoon to press the berries against the strainer to extract the last of the juice.
  6. Usage: Drink one cup daily, preferably in the evening when the eyes are resting from the day’s strain.

Benefits and Target Impact

Enhancing Night Vision and Light Adaptation Bilberries were famously used by pilots in traditional lore to improve their vision in low light. The anthocyanins in the berries help regenerate “rhodopsin,” a pigment in the eye that allows you to see in the dark. For older adults, this can help provide a greater sense of security when moving around the house at night.

Filtering High-Energy Light The lutein found in calendula petals acts as a natural filter for the macula. As we spend more time looking at screens or in bright environments, this “yellow pigment” helps absorb harmful light before it can damage the sensitive photoreceptor cells, helping to preserve the sharpness of the central vision.

Soothing the “Gritty” Eye Eyebright earns its name from its traditional use in calming the redness and dryness often associated with aging eyes. It helps regulate the fluid balance and soothe the irritation of the eyelids, making the act of seeing feel less like a chore and more like a comfort.
