Forest-Floor Hair & Scalp Tonic

This aromatic preparation is unique because it serves as both a nourishing tea and a topical rinse, addressing hair health from both the inside and the outside.

Ingredients

  • 1 tablespoon Fresh or Dried Rosemary: A powerful circulatory stimulant that helps bring bloodโ€”and therefore oxygen and nutrientsโ€”directly to the hair follicles.
  • 1 tablespoon Dried Horsetail: One of the highest plant sources of silica, which is the primary mineral used by the body to build the structure of hair and prevent breakage.
  • 1 teaspoon Dried Sage: Traditionally used to darken hair naturally and soothe scalp irritations or “hot spots.”
  • 1/2 teaspoon Apple Cider Vinegar: Used only if applying topically, to help balance the pH of the scalp and “seal” the hair cuticle.
  • 500ml Water (approximately 2 cups).

Instructions

  1. Boil and Simmer: Place the horsetail and rosemary in a pot with the water. Bring to a boil, then reduce the heat to low.
  2. The Extraction: Cover and simmer for 10 minutes. This ensures the silica from the horsetail is fully extracted into the liquid.
  3. The Steep: Turn off the heat and add the sage. Cover tightly and let the mixture steep until it is completely cool.
  4. Strain: Use a fine-mesh cloth to strain out all plant material.
  5. Dual Usage: * Internal: Drink one small cup daily to provide the “building blocks” of silica to your system.
    • External: After washing your hair, stir the apple cider vinegar into the remaining cooled liquid. Pour it over your scalp and hair as a final rinse. Do not rinse it out; let it air dry.

Benefits and Target Impact

Revitalizing Dormant Follicles Rosemary has been traditionally used to “wake up” the scalp. By increasing local circulation, it ensures that the hair folliclesโ€”which can become sluggish with ageโ€”receive the hormonal and nutritional signals they need to continue growing healthy hair rather than thinning out.

Increasing Tensile Strength The silica in horsetail is what gives hair its “snap.” As hair ages, it can become brittle and prone to splitting. By providing an abundance of this mineral, this tonic helps the body build a stronger hair shaft that can withstand brushing and environmental stress without breaking.

Soothing Scalp Environment Sage and rosemary both possess natural properties that help keep the scalp free of the flakiness and dryness that often increase as skin loses its ability to produce natural oils. A healthy “soil” is required for a healthy “crop,” and this rinse ensures the scalp remains clear and balanced.
