Orange Peel Infusion

It is truly a shame how often we toss away orange peels, considering they contain higher concentrations of flavonoids and phytonutrients than the fruit itself. When you add salt to these peels, you trigger a process called osmosis, which draws out the potent essential oils (limonene) and creates a powerful, natural cleaning and wellness agent.

This simple combination creates a “liquid gold” that replaces harsh, synthetic store-bought chemicals and skin treatments.

The 3-Ingredient Orange Peel Infusion

This recipe focuses on creating a multi-purpose Enzymatic Cleaner and Scrub that is safe for your home and your body.

  • Peels from 2 Large Oranges: Rich in d-limonene, a natural solvent that dissolves grease.
  • 2 tbsp Sea Salt: Acts as a preservative and an abrasive scrub.
  • 1 Cup White Vinegar: To extract the oils and provide antibacterial properties.

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Peels: Cut your orange peels into thin strips. If you have time, scrape away the bitter white pith from the insideโ€”the zest is where the powerful oils live.
  2. The Salt Step: Place the peels in a clean glass jar and sprinkle the sea salt over them. Shake the jar well so every peel is coated. Let this sit for 30 minutes. You will notice the salt becoming damp and orange as it draws out the essential oils.
  3. The Infusion: Pour the white vinegar over the salted peels until they are completely submerged.
  4. Wait and Strain: Seal the jar and keep it in a dark, cool place for one week. Shake it daily. After 7 days, strain the liquid into a spray bottle.
  5. Use: Use the liquid as an all-purpose surface cleaner. You can take the leftover salted peels and use them to scrub stubborn stains off wooden cutting boards or stainless steel sinks.

Why You Will “Thank Me Forever”

  • Powerful Degreaser: The limonene in orange peels is one of natureโ€™s best solvents. It cuts through kitchen grease that even soap struggles with.
  • Aromatherapy Benefits: Unlike synthetic “citrus-scented” sprays, this natural scent is proven to reduce cortisol (the stress hormone) and lift your mood while you clean.
  • Eco-Friendly & Non-Toxic: You are keeping plastic bottles out of landfills and keeping toxic fumes away from your family and pets.

A Thoughtful Health Note

As we have explored with other potent treatments like Ginger, Celery Juice, and Castor Oil, even natural citrus oils require a bit of care:

  • Furniture Finish: While great for most surfaces, the high acidity of vinegar and the oils in the orange can strip the finish off unsealed marble or granite. Always test a small, hidden area first.
  • Skin Sensitivity: If you use the salted peels as a body scrub (which is wonderful for exfoliating rough heels), avoid doing so before going into the sun. Citrus oils are phototoxic and can lead to a localized sunburn if exposed to UV rays too quickly.

A Pro-Tip: If you have a garbage disposal that smells a bit “off,” toss a few of the salt-cured peels down there and run it with cold water. It will disinfect the blades and leave your kitchen smelling like a fresh orchard.
