Making soap at home using fresh lemon is a wonderful way to create a natural, deodorizing cleanser. While traditional bar soap requires a chemical process called saponification (using lye), a much safer and more accessible way for beginners to do this at home is the “Melt and Pour” method.
By using a pre-made natural soap base, you can focus on infusing it with the brightness and skin-clearing properties of a fresh lemon without handling harsh chemicals.
The Benefits of Lemon in Soap
- Natural Astringent: Lemon juice helps to cut through excess oil on the skin, making it excellent for oily or acne-prone areas.
- Brightening: The citric acid acts as a very mild exfoliant, helping to remove dead skin cells and brighten the skin’s appearance.
- Deodorizing: Lemon is one of nature’s best neutralizers for stubborn odors, making this a perfect “kitchen soap” for washing hands after cooking.
- Aromatherapy: The scent of lemon is naturally uplifting and can help improve focus and mood during your morning shower.
The Recipe: Fresh Lemon & Zest Handcrafted Bar
This recipe makes approximately two standard-sized bars. It uses the whole lemonโboth the juice and the zestโto maximize the benefits.
Ingredients
- 1/2 lb (approx. 225g) of Clear or Goatโs Milk “Melt and Pour” soap base (available at craft stores)
- 1 Fresh Lemon (you will use the zest and 1 teaspoon of juice)
- Optional: 10 drops of Lemon Essential Oil (for a stronger, lasting scent)
- Optional: 1 teaspoon of dried poppy seeds (to act as a “scrub” and look like lemon seeds)
Instructions
- Prepare the Lemon: Finely zest the entire lemon. Spread the zest out on a paper towel for about 20 minutes to let some of the moisture evaporate (this prevents the zest from clumping in the soap). Squeeze one teaspoon of fresh juice and set aside.
- Cut the Base: Cut the soap base into small, uniform 1-inch cubes. This ensures it melts evenly without burning.
- Melt: Place the cubes in a microwave-safe glass bowl. Microwave in 30-second intervals, stirring in between with a metal spoon, until the liquid is completely smooth.
- Infuse: Once melted, remove from the heat. Stir in the lemon zest, the teaspoon of lemon juice, and the essential oil if you are using it. Stir gently to avoid creating too many air bubbles.
- Add Texture: If you want an exfoliating bar, stir in the poppy seeds now.
- Mold: Pour the liquid into silicone soap molds.
- Set: Let the bars sit undisturbed at room temperature for at least 2 to 3 hours. Once they are completely firm and cool to the touch, pop them out of the molds.
A Thoughtful Tip: Because fresh lemon juice and zest contain moisture, these bars are best used within a few months. Store them in a cool, dry place to keep them from “sweating.”
