Jennifer Lopez and Ben Affleck’s marriage is officially coming to an end after two years. On August 20, their second wedding anniversary, Lopez filed for divorce, citing irreconcilable differences. However, sources suggest that filing on this particular date was not coincidental but rather a calculated move by Lopez.

An insider told the Daily Mail, “Jennifer said she was tired of being humiliated by Ben, and she waited until their two-year anniversary because she wanted it to sting.” However, the source added that her plan may not have had the desired effect:

“But it didn’t sting him. He’s been done for a long time, and deep down, she knows this. He let her have this so she wouldn’t look like the villain.”

The timing of the divorce filing has been interpreted as a deliberate message from Lopez. A source told Us Weekly, “The timing of the divorce was a big ‘f–k you’ to Ben.” Despite the dramatic timing, Affleck seems to have moved on, with sources indicating that he emotionally checked out of the marriage well before the official separation.

Lopez listed the date of separation as April 26, 2024, and made it clear she does not want spousal support from Affleck, asking the judge to deny him any support as well. She also requested to drop “Affleck” as her last name, signaling a desire to fully close this chapter of her life. Notably, the couple did not have a prenuptial agreement, according to TMZ sources, which could complicate the financial aspects of the divorce.

Signs of trouble in their marriage became public when Lopez attended the Met Gala solo on May 6, sparking rumors of a split. Affleck later moved out of their $60 million marital mansion and into a rental home, while Lopez continued with her busy schedule.

The couple did not spend her 55th birthday or their second wedding anniversary together. On Affleck’s 52nd birthday, Lopez was seen at his rental home, but she was later spotted enjoying a Bruno Mars concert without him, dancing to the song “Marry Me.”

Lopez and Affleck’s relationship has been a rollercoaster over the years. The couple first got together in 2002, but their initial engagement ended in 2004. They rekindled their romance two decades later, tying the knot at the Little White Chapel in Las Vegas in July 2022. A month later, they held a more extravagant ceremony at Affleck’s home in Riceboro, Georgia, on August 20, 2022.

Reflecting on their reunion, Lopez told People magazine, “We’re older now, we’re smarter, we have more experience, we’re at different places in our lives, we have kids now, and we have to be very conscious of those things.” Despite their best efforts, the relationship ultimately faltered, with sources claiming the cracks began to show during their Italy honeymoon.

Affleck has three children—Violet, Seraphina, and Samuel—with his ex-wife Jennifer Garner, while Lopez shares 16-year-old twins, Emme and Max, with ex-husband Marc Anthony. As both stars move forward, their focus remains on their respective families.
