Emma Watson has introduced a new term to describe her relationship status: ‘self-partnered.’ She shared this unique concept in a candid interview following her reflection on life as she approached her 30th birthday.
In a 2019 conversation with Vogue, Emma expressed her personal journey with the pressures and expectations tied to milestone birthdays. As she neared 30, she felt weighed down by societal norms and what she hadnโt achieved by then.
Emma Watson, known for her role in the Harry Potter series, explained, โThereโs this sudden barrage of subliminal messages. If by 30, you haven’t set up home, found a husband, or had a baby โ or if your career isnโt on solid ground, thereโs an immense pressure.โ
She continued, โIt took me some time, but I am very content being single. I like to refer to it as being self-partnered.โ

This new terminology puzzled many fans. But what does being ‘self-partnered’ entail?
In essence, it describes someone who is truly content with being single. Such individuals are not seeking a relationship as a source of fulfillment, finding satisfaction in their own company.
Emma met with Vogue again in 2023, at the age of 34, to delve deeper into her self-partnered philosophy. โBy the time I turned 30, I realized Iโd learned a lot about how to take care of myself better, perhaps even quite well. I took pride in that realization,โ she explained.
Moreover, after experiencing the COVID-19 pandemic, Emma gained insight into the importance of building and nurturing community. She dedicated time and energy to purposefully investing in these connections.
Interestingly, despite her secure and happy single life, Emma is reportedly in a relationship with Kieran Brown, an Oxford University student. The duo began dating in July 2024.
