President Donald Trump recently made a bold move by signing an executive order to rename the Gulf of Mexico, a decision that hasn’t gone down well with the Mexican government.
The Mexican President, Claudia Sheinbaum, expressed her firm stance, stating that while Trump can name it differently, it applies only to the American portion.
“According to him, it will be called the ‘Gulf of America’ for the part that belongs to the U.S. To us, and to the rest of the world, it remains the Gulf of Mexico,” Sheinbaum remarked.
Trump had entertained the idea of the name change before stepping into office, saying it seemed “appropriate.”

“We’re aiming to rename the Gulf of Mexico as the Gulf of America โ it has such a beautiful sound and stretches across an expansive area,” he stated earlier. “The Gulf of America, just a wonderful name.”
This announcement came during his inauguration speech, lightening the mood a bit for some, including Hillary Clinton. He didn’t waste time, as the order was signed later that afternoon.
As released by the White House, the order claims “the area, formerly the Gulf of Mexico, has been a crucial asset to our once thriving Nation and continues to be an integral part of America.”
Also highlighted, “The Gulf plays a significant role in influencing America’s future and the global economy.” The statement further directed that “considering its thriving economic importance to our Nation’s economy and citizens, it shall officially be renamed the Gulf of America.”
The Gulf serves as a critical resource shared by the United States, Mexico, and Cuba, known for fishing, oil extraction, and international commerce.
The initial time Trump spoke about the potential renaming, Sheinbaum responded with humor, suggesting alternate names like “Amรฉrica Mexicana” or “Mexican America” for North America.
Renaming the Gulf of Mexico is not a simple task. It demands extensive diplomatic discussions, considering the shared waters and international agreements involved.
