Summer is here, bringing beautiful sunny days, warm weather, and blossoming flowers. But with the increase in insect activity, especially wasps, it can be a challenge to avoid them. This is particularly true for our dedicated mail carriers who face a unique problem – wasp nests in mailboxes.

A Common Problem: Wasp Nests in Mailboxes

As I discovered from a Reddit post by a mail carrier, wasps, especially yellowjackets, have a tendency to make their homes in mailboxes. Even though the daytime temperatures can be hot, the evenings can still be chilly, making mailboxes a cozy retreat for these buzzing insects.

The Hazards for Mail Carriers

Imagine the surprise of unsuspecting mail carriers who find themselves face-to-face with a swarm of wasps congregating at the back of mailboxes. As they reach inside to deliver the mail, these agitated wasps are ready to defend their newfound territory, resulting in painful stings. In fact, some carriers have experienced up to ten stings in just one summer.
