She was adored not only by viewers but also by those she worked with behind the scenes. Her humor, daily chats, and comforting presence will be sorely missed on set. Since joining the cast of General Hospital in 1977, Charleson had recently been dealing with mobility issues stemming from several falls. While the exact cause of her death remains unknown, it was reported that she had been hospitalized after a fall, a week prior to her passing. Despite these challenges, Leslie exhibited unwavering dedication to her craft, with her final appearance on the show aired in December 2023, underscoring her commitment even amidst personal adversity.

Leslie Charleson was born on February 22, 1945, in Kansas City, Missouri, surrounded by a nurturing and creative family. Her path into entertainment was influenced by her father’s role as a publishing executive and a neighbor who worked at ABC, setting the stage for her to step into the world of acting.

Her acting career took off in 1964 with the soap A Flame in the Wind, followed by gaining recognition on As the World Turns. Leslie’s presence was both talented and engaging, which eventually led her to the illustrious role on General Hospital.

In a warm recollection of her early days in soap operas, Leslie shared advice from her mentor, Roy Poole, from a 1993 interview: “Don’t fret about the viewers or what to do with your hands,” she recalled, chuckling. “His words really helped me to relax and fit into my roles naturally, without overthinking.”

Leslie Charleson’s portrayal of Monica Quartermaine offered heartfelt and stirring stories of family conflicts and serious health challenges. One of her most impactful storylines was Monica’s battle with breast cancer from 1994 to 2000.

Leslie shared her insight into this experience with co-star Maurice Benard in 2022: “We aimed to depict the journey as truthfully as we could,” she mentioned. “Knowing the writers and producer had personally battled cancer made it significantly meaningful for everyone involved. I even visited wellness centers to get a real feel for patient life. We were committed to getting it right.”

Throughout her career, Leslie Charleson received four Daytime Emmy nominations for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Seriesโ€”in 1980, 1982, 1983, and 1995โ€”for her exceptional work. Outside of General Hospital, Leslie appeared in Woman on the Ledge featuring Deidre Hall and Colleen Zenk in 1993, and she continued playing Monica in spin-offs like Port Charles and General Hospital: Night Shift.

In a 2019 interview, Leslie attributed her enduring career to a genuine passion for storytelling and forging meaningful connections. “The stories and the people I work with have always interested me,” she said with fondness. “I’m one of the few from General Hospital who hasn’t ventured onto another soap. It’s truly home for me.”
