Conspiracies Circulate Over TikTok Ban and Trump’s Role

Thereโ€™s a wave of chatter on social media surrounding the reasons for TikTokโ€™s recent ban in the USA. Speculation runs high, and many believe thereโ€™s a deeper, possibly darker motive behind it.

Former President Trump, taking credit for keeping TikTok operational in the U.S. after a brief shutdown, has shared some surprising claims. At his rally on January 19th, he openly stated that the app played a pivotal role in securing his 2024 presidential victory by capturing the attention and votes of younger Americans, particularly those within the 18-29 age group.

Indeed, it appears Trumpโ€™s influence worked wonders among this demographic, especially among young men. Explaining his actions, he suggested he was compelled to ensure the appโ€™s availability to protect the livelihoods of many users, which led to his insistence on a shared ownership deal with ByteDance, TikTokโ€™s parent company from China.

However, skepticism abounds on the internet. Many are dismissing Trumpโ€™s narrative as nothing more than a strategic move to bolster his political standing. Some online voices have labeled it as possibly the โ€œbiggest PR stunt in USA history,โ€ showcasing their disbelief in the genuineness of the situation.

Comments on social media platform X highlight disbelief. Individuals expressed sentiments like, โ€œthis has to be the biggest PR stunt in USA historyโ€ and โ€œmost obvious PR stunt ever.โ€ Others echoed similar disbelief, stating, โ€œThis was such a PR stunt and now I gotta hear about Trump saving TikTok from his new supportersโ€ฆโ€ Another added, โ€œHaving Trump in the notifications for the app closing… this TikTok PR stunt is crazy.โ€

The theory is fueled by the short duration of the ban coupled with the allegedly close ties between Trump and TikTok CEO Shou Zi Chew, suggesting the entire episode was orchestrated as a spectacle.

It’s worth noting that this isn’t the first time Trump has expressed a desire to see the app banned; such thoughts were also voiced in 2020.

At this point, neither Trump nor TikTok has made further statements regarding the speculations and accusations swirling online.
