When tragedy strikes, even the strongest among us can feel the weight of a heavy loss. That’s exactly what happened to country music star Blake Shelton when his dear friend Joe Bonsall passed away. Joe, a beloved member of The Oak Ridge Boys from 1973 to 2024, left behind a void that will never be filled.
Blake took to Instagram to pay tribute to his friend and share his grief with the world. Alongside a beautiful picture of himself singing alongside Joe and the band, Blake wrote, “I’m heartbroken to hear of my friend Joe Bonsall’s death.
I’ve NEVER seen Joe when he wasn’t smiling and completely full of life. He loved singing more than anyone I’ve ever met.” It was a heartfelt and touching way to remember their friendship.
Joe’s passing was a result of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease. Fans were saddened to learn about his diagnosis in January 2024.
Joe, a devoted husband to Mary Ann and a proud father to two daughters, Jennifer and Sabrina, brought so much joy to their lives. He was also blessed with two grandchildren and two great-grandchildren, all of whom will forever cherish the memories they created with him.
In addition to his musical talent, Joe was a talented writer. In fact, he authored 11 books during his lifetime, including his upcoming memoir, I See Myself, set to be released in November.
This memoir will undoubtedly serve as a testament to his incredible journey and the mark he left on this world.
Although Joe’s battle with ALS forced him to leave The Oak Ridge Boys, his impact on the iconic band will never be forgotten. With members like William Lee Golden, Richard Sterban, Duane Allen, and Joe himself, The Oak Ridge Boys became synonymous with country music hits like “Elvira” and “Bobbie Sue.”
Their passion and talent earned them five Grammys and they were rightfully inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame in 2015.
Joe’s legacy will live on through the music he created and the lives he touched. As Blake Shelton aptly stated, “Today we all lost someone important.” Yet, even in the face of such profound loss, we can find solace in the knowledge that Joe’s memory will continue to inspire and his songs will continue to bring joy to the hearts of many.
To honor Joe’s legacy, The Oak Ridge Boys have embarked on their American Made: The Farewell Tour, which runs until December 8. This is a chance for fans to come together and celebrate the music that has touched their lives. So, let’s remember Joe Bonsall, a true legend in the world of country music, and let his spirit live on through the melodies that will forever be a part of our lives.
