Traditional Flaxseed Sleep Tonic

In traditional folk medicine, linen teaโ€”more commonly known as flaxseed tea (as linen is the fabric woven from the flax plant)โ€”is a gentle, soothing infusion. It is prized for its “mucilaginous” or coating properties, which provide a grounding sensation that helps settle the body before rest.

When the seeds are steeped, they release a soft, gel-like substance that is traditionally believed to soothe the digestive tract and calm the “internal wind” that can keep a person tossing and turning at night.

Traditional Flaxseed Sleep Tonic

This preparation uses the whole flaxseeds to create a smooth, warm beverage that prepares the body for a deep, restorative slumber.

Ingredients

  • 1 Tablespoon Whole Flaxseeds: (Linen seeds). Using whole seeds creates a clearer, smoother tea than ground meal.
  • 2 Cups Filtered Water: To allow for evaporation during the simmer.
  • 1 Small Pinch of Nutmeg: Traditionally used in small amounts as a natural sedative.
  • 1 Teaspoon Raw Honey: (Optional) To support the brain’s nighttime rest cycle.

Instructions

  1. Place the whole flaxseeds into a small pot with the 2 cups of water.
  2. Bring the water to a gentle boil, then immediately turn the heat down to low.
  3. Simmer the seeds uncovered for 10โ€“15 minutes. You will notice the water thickening slightly and taking on a light golden color.
  4. Remove from the heat and add the pinch of nutmeg.
  5. Let the tea steep for an additional 5 minutes to allow the seeds to settle at the bottom.
  6. Strain the liquid into a mug, discarding the softened seeds.
  7. Stir in the honey if desired and sip slowly about 30โ€“45 minutes before you intend to sleep.

The Benefits

  • Magnesium Source: Flaxseeds are naturally rich in magnesium, a mineral that helps the muscles relax and supports the regulation of melatonin, the sleep hormone.
  • Digestive Comfort: By soothing the lining of the stomach and intestines, this tea prevents the minor digestive “noise” that often interrupts the onset of sleep.
  • Tryptophan Support: When paired with a tiny bit of honey, the nutrients in the tea help the brain process tryptophan, which is a precursor to serotonin and sleep-inducing melatonin.
  • Omega-3 Fatty Acids: The healthy fats found in the seeds support overall brain health and help stabilize the nervous system after a long day of stress.

Note: Because this tea is high in natural fiber, it is important to drink plenty of water throughout the day. If you are taking any medications, leave a two-hour gap between your medication and this tea, as the mucilage can occasionally slow down the absorption of other substances.
