We’ve all heard that dying grey roots at home can be nasty and time-consuming. Fortunately, if you want to extend the time between colorist appointments or if you don’t have enough silver hair to dye your hair yet, plenty of different do-it-yourself coloring procedures won’t break the budget.

(Would you rather accept your greying hair? This is what these women did, and it revolutionized their lives.)

Grey hair touch-up sticks, sprays, and brushes are excellent and simple methods for hiding unsightly silver strands. After washing and drying your hair, all you have to do is apply the product to your greys as directed.

Consider your hair’s natural color or regular dye before choosing a color. Choosing the appropriate hue may require trial and error, but the good news is that most of these products (and all on our list below) wash off with shampoo.

Here are five different types of grey hair concealers that Ulta customers love—and they’re all under $30.

Cover Your Gray Waterproof Root Touch-Up Wand

If you’re constantly on the go, this is the tool for you. Color wands are the easiest to use and perfect for making quick touch-ups throughout the day when it comes to grey-hiding hair products. Draw on your grey hair strands, starting from your hair part and working your way down your scalp for the greatest results

Because the Cover Your Gray stick is waterproof, you may use it to keep your silver hairs hidden at the pool as well. According to one Ulta client, the color lasts for 10 days as long as she touches up at the five-day mark.

Root Touch-Up Brush by Madison Reed

Invest in a color brush to cover up larger spots of gray hair. The Madison Reed brush is on the more expensive side of temporary cover-up equipment, but it is well worth the money.

Before putting the powder on your hair, spray a thin layer of hairspray over the areas you want to conceal; the hairspray will work as a glue, keeping the color in place throughout the day.

One customer says, “Using this product has reduced my need to color my hair! I can go a month or more without coloring my hair if I just touch up my roots. It works great but needs to be reapplied after shampooing.” (Here are six additional non-dye solutions to treat grey hair.)

Here’s how to develop thick, lustrous hair at 40 and up:

L’Oréal Paris Root Cover-Up is a concealer spray.

Try a color spray if you want something quick to apply that also covers up larger grey streaks. The L’Oréal Paris one will not clump your strands together or leave a gloppy residue behind. Just make sure to spritz barely enough to cover your greys—too much spray will make your hair look wet. Hold the bottle farther away from your head and softly spray if you miss a section.

“I style my hair and then just fill in my parts and hairline with short, quick sprays maybe 6 inches from the hair,” an Ulta customer says. “It goes in easily and dries quickly.” It does not leave a dusty or cakey finish.”

Concealer for touch-ups: John Frieda Root Blur Color Blending Concealer

Hair color concealer is used in the same way as blemish concealer is. Use medium-to-hard pressure to disguise your grey strands after rubbing the applicator into the color. The compact size of John Frieda’s brush makes it ideal for coloring in stray grey hairs in various areas of your head. Ulta customers particularly praised this product’s dual color palette, which contains two identical tones to pick from:

“The color combo is great for natural-looking blending,” one reviewer says. “I was skeptical that the light color would work, but it does. It will last until you wash it again.” (You may also go grey in style with these amazing grey hair styling techniques.)

Everpro Gray Away Root Touch-Up Magnetic Powder is a touch-up powder.

This instrument, like a touch-up brush, uses a tinted powder for color, but you apply it with a little sponge. Apply the Everpro powder to your strands with minimal pressure for the most even coverage. If you push too firmly, you’ll have to sweep off the excess powder. This item comes in a small case that you can keep in your purse and use to touch up throughout the day.

“The best part of the application system, it has a little sponge and you dab it on,” one Ulta client remarks. “It was so quick and simple.”
